Primary Years 4 – 6

The Primary Years’ Learning Areas provide a safe, engaging and happy environment where students feel valued, empowered and are celebrated.  We focus on each child’s social and emotional well-being to help them gain an understanding of their world so they can explore and interact with confidence and assurance.

During these primary years of learning, students are encouraged to engage and make sense of the world around them through real-life experiences aligned to the Western Australian Curriculum. We focus on assisting students to acquire the necessary skills for learning by providing a communication rich environment, learning zones, sensory strategies, individual learning goals, communication partners, co-regulation support, social connections and play with a focus on Communication, Language and Literacy.

Each Primary class is structured to support the learning and regulation needs of the students. Class size and the number of education assistants is carefully considered to ensure optimal learning support is provided throughout the school day. A typical class consists of up to six students, a special education teacher and four education assistants.

Every student has an Individualised Education Plan containing a set of individual learning, therapy and family goals prepared in consultation with parents and therapists.

The Primary Years’ Learning Areas access a range of facilities and equipment that promote happy, engaged and curious learners.  Students experience and learn to safely engage with technology including iPads, eye-gaze, switches and interactive electronic boards to provide a range of learning experiences that promote communication.

Our facilities include a hydrotherapy centre, a large kitchen garden, and a playground offering purpose built sand pits, climbing equipment, go-cart track and trampolines as well as a selection of indoor playing choices.

At Castlereagh we understand that parents make the world of difference when it comes to student learning. Communication between school and home is vital to ensure information is shared so each student has success with their learning every day.

Our goal is to engage and support students, provide structured learning opportunities within their physical environment, use visual supports and focus on students’ strengths and interests to promote positive, creative and independent young learners.
