At Castlereagh School we support the belief that:
- The need to communicate our thoughts and to connect with others is one of the primary underlying reasons for the presence of challenging behaviour.
- Behaviour is part of being human, it is action and communication. It’s a part of everyday life.
- Everything we do is behaviour the way in which we respond to the world is a result of underlying needs.
- People are more than their behaviour. We must understand the world through their eyes.
- Behaviour is a sign of changes in regulation. People need support to develop awareness and skills in self-regulation. *
Castlereagh School uses a Co-Regulation Approach for students with complex communication and learning needs. The Co-Regulation Approach is an evidence guided, whole school approach which aims to support students to be in an optimal cognitive and emotional state for learning and wellbeing.
This way of thinking about behaviour aligns with the Department of Education Student Behaviour Policy and Procedures and links to the Western Australian Positive Behaviour Support Framework.
At Castlereagh School we focus on working towards understanding the underlying needs of students rather than the behaviour alone. By seeing the child or young adult and their quality of life, we are able to develop support strategies to meet and recognise these needs rather than just focusing on the behaviour alone.
Our Co-Regulation Approach and Team are supported by Clinical Psychologist Kat Smith, HelloBrightSeed who actively guides staff supporting students.
Our aim is to support a student feel connected, safe and regulated, happy and engaged for learning.
