Conductive Education assists our students in Year 7 — 12 with their conquest of self-discovery and to be active participants in their secondary school education. Students learn how to learn through movement, balance and communication in a positive, fun and integrated environment.
Conductive Education is a holistic system of education which was established by Professor Andras Petö in Hungary in 1945 and is underpinned by the key principles:
- The Group: Motivates and encourages participation in activities.
- The Daily Routine: A carefully planned timetable that ensures active involvement in each part of the program. The aim and content depend on the requirements of the individual and the particular group.
- The Task Series: A sequence of tasks broken down into small steps focussing on the learning / teaching of motor skills. It is the basic framework to learn, practise and consolidate required motor skills. Task series include stool sitting, hand skills, preparation for standing and walking.
- The Conductor: A highly trained specialist with expertise in delivering educational programs for children with physical disability. The Conductor develops programs in consultation with teachers, allied health professionals and parents to support development.
- Facilitation: Includes physical cues and prompts, use of rhythmical intention, as well as specialised equipment that encourages holding and grasping i.e. stools, ladders, sticks and grasp bars.
Castlereagh School empowers children and young adults with complex communication and learning needs to be active participants in their learning. Our whole school focus of Communication, Language and Lliteracy aligns with the core principles of Conductive Education. Students are encouraged to develop self-responsibility and use their movement more meaningfully. Students learn by moving and move by learning. In 2022, 15 secondary students are engaged with Conductive Education.
Our team works together with Carson Street School in providing a seamless transition from the primary to the secondary school Conductive Education program.
